I first read about Alex on the
Alex foundation website. They even have a clip of him counting blocks, telling the difference between two keys, and asking for the things he wants. Here is a
great news story about how parrots are learning to communicate with humans, and it features Alex.

[...] Whether she’s talking about Alex, the African Grey Parrot or the Discovery Channel’s ROAR program, it’s easy to see that Aimee’s heart is all about the animals. [...]
Okay yes Alex is very intelligent... however have you seen him? Have you seen his feathers? He does not have a tail?? Has Dr. Pepperberg ever explained this? The bird has plucked all of his wing feathers, tail feathers and his body feathers. Pepperberg is not a vet and has overworked him. Happy healthy birds dont pluck. And have you watched any of the videos? The poor bird looks tired. She should be brought up on charges of animal abuse!! I am owned by A blue-fronted amazon, a blue and gold macaw and an african grey. None of my birds are plucking or screaming AND i work full time!! Alex was abused and I'm sick of seeing all these donations to go to her "foundation" when there are birds out there that truely need help or need adopted!! - Cassandra
